Commercial orchardists need to know more about the maturity or their fruit:
- When to harvest for long term storage
- When to start and finish harvest to prevent loosing mature fruit dropping
- To plan for harvest labour
- To plan for harvest material and equipment
- To plan for storage
Most commercial orchardists use all the indices that gardeners and home orchardists use as well as a starch test, a soluble solids test and a pressure test. Other more advanced tests are that are used in some areas include Acidity, colour measurements, ethylene measurement and DA meter test (measures chlorophyll in the outer layer of the apple).
